Modern Malandrino

Moroccanoil Artistic Director Antonio Corral Calero created a strong, modern and unique take on the elegant French Twist for Catherine Malandrino's chic, modern Spring/Summer 2013 collection, which was presented during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City. The sophisticated and graphic look combines a French twist (close-to the head and with the sides pulled flat) with a unique multi-textured wave of volume at the top.

A contrasting "wet" shadowed effect along the hairline adds an edgy, urban effect. The look's volume and height was accomplished without any backcombing. All "lift" was created through the use of volumizing products including new Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse (available in October), Moroccanoil Root Boost (available early in 2013) and Moroccanoil Sculpting Gel (now in development).

Create The Look

Star stylist Antonio Corral Calero first applied Moroccanoil Treatment from the roots to the ends to make sure that all of the models' hair was smooth, shiny and healthy-looking. It created the perfect foundation for styling.

Since volume (at the top) was an essential and Corral Calero didn't want to backcomb the hair, he instead applied new Moroccanoil Root Boost directly at the roots-and new Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse mid-length and down to the ends to help thicken the hair.

Then the stylist blow dried the hair, using his fingers to create a free, messy, natural-looking texture.

Corral Calero then swept the hair completely to the left side and applied a series of pins vertically to flatten the hair in the middle of the back of the head and to create an anchor. He then rolled the twist, tucked it in and pinned it. He wanted to create a more flattened effect below to provide a stronger contrast to the volume on top.

Corral Calero then worked on the textured wave. Using a 1" curling iron, he randomly curled some sections on top of the head while leaving others completely natural-to mingle contrasting textures and to create the structure for the lifted wave above the French twist-all without teasing.

To give a slightly edgy effect, the stylist applied Moroccanoil Sculpting Gel around the hairline for visual interest, contrast and texture.

He then misted the entire look with Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray for lots of shine, and finished with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong. It gives a natural-looking hold that lets the dramatic texture show without looking as if any product was in the hair.
