Want to know what’s in your dry shampoo or dry conditioner? Here are three common ingredients with oil-robbing abilities.
• Kaolin: Made from a clay-based mixture of silica, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, zinc and other minerals Kaolin’s popularity as a skincare ingredient—and dry shampoo—comes from its ability to absorb surface oils and even purify pores. It’s also rumored to stimulate the organic processes of skin.
• Rice Starch: For cosmetic purposes, rice starch is commonly separated from broken rice via high-powered water nozzles. It’s extremely absorbent, plentiful and is heavily used in cosmetics due to its silky feel and oil-absorbing qualities.
• Zeolite: Found in cavities of lava flows and plutonic rocks (formed at great depth beneath the earth’s surface), zeolite has a microporous structure that absorbs oils and traps odors. Zeolite isn’t a specific mineral, but rather a crystalline structure formed most commonly by aluminosilicate.
“When you can’t shampoo…Minipoo!”
Is there anything new under the sun? Not much in terms of concept, it appears, but certainly in terms of formulation. Minipoo—the first commercial dry shampoo—debuted in the ’40s. The powdery product was chock-full of fuller’s earth (clay-like material) and was first marketed to hospitals and nursing homes for bedridden patients. Eventually, as you can see from the ’47 photo that accompanies this write-up, it was also touted as a quick fix for every woman who suffered from mid-week hair grime.
As you might have guessed by now, the dry shampoo concept was sound, but the product was not. After absorbing natural oils, a strange, gray cast would develop where Minipoo met stinkypoo…um, make that days-old sebum…while the greasiest patches formed a kind of ghostly gray paste. Thank goodness for mode technology and the disappearing act of today’s dry products!
