Marc Jacobs spins 180° for his colorific spring/summer 2011 show at New York's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

Club 54 anyone? Channeling fearless disco dames Angelica Huston and Bianca Jagger, Marc Jacobs’ ’70s-inspired spring showing unleashed a colorful rush of puffy peasant blouses, micro-sized hot pants, bare-shouldered jumpsuits, and halter dresses with slits up to…well…there.  Wide-brimmed, floppy hats added jet fuel to Jacob’s already out-of-this-world presentation, while giving a big nod to the once nubile Jodie Foster in the ’77 blockbuster, Taxi Driver.

Toppers aside, it was the ’30s-inspired beauty elements thrown into the mix that sealed the deal for Jacobs’ seductive spring offerings. Vamped-up eyes, invisible brows and frenetically waved hair remi-niscent of a young Grace Coddington and cinematic bombshell Jean Harlow, sent this collection into the stratosphere.

Steal These Looks

For all looks, Guido applied Redken thickening lotion 06 throughout to build body, volume and style retention before thoroughly drying the hair. Creating a side part and beginning 3 to 4 inches down the shaft, he formed tight curls by making 1-inch deep and 3-inch wide horizontal rolls that were pinned and generously sprayed with Redken fashion work 12. The rolls were reheated using a warm blow-dryer and allowed to set for 10 minutes.

• Bundled curls: Release and fluff hair without disturbing curl shapes and manually move each coil into place.

• Fuzzy fingerwaves: Press each pinned roll with a high-heat, flat iron to create crimped ridges. Cool, release and finger-style for separation, fullness and movement.

• Grace Under Fire: After crimping rolls and cooling, unfasten and finger-style curls before unleashing voluminous frizz with a 9-row styling brush (think Denman).

Crimp Your Style

Guido Palau,
style-setting icon and
Redken Creative Consultant

Wildly creative, renaissance stylist Guido (Palau) abandoned trussed-up tresses for free-flying kinks to embellish the strong-willed, audacious persona of Marc Jacobs’ spring/summer show. While 60 models pranced the runway with four distinct curl variations, it was the crisp curls and flocks of frizzy fingerwaves that had us chin-wagging with friends. “The show had a variety of looks that any woman can wear—very glamorous and decadent!” Guido declares. His message: Take the looks and calm them down by adding soft waves in place of crimps and natural-looking volume in lieu of fierce frizz.
