Love is in the Hair!

Matrix ''Spreads the Love'' at its astounding Imagination event.

The nights were balmy and the days were filled with sunshine, but inside the J.W. Marriott Desert Spring Resort in Palm Springs, California, things were heating up as Matrix turned the hotel's grand ballroom into a sizzling event. For three heart-pumping days, Matrix brought Imagination to life for 1,600 lucky attendees who were inspired to become change-makers, artistic visionaries and better business people.

“Welcome to Imagination where we all unleash our dreams,” declared Matrix Vice-President and General Manager Colin Walsh. With these words, a breathtaking series of vignettes were staged—each bringing Matrix artists’ NAHA photo collections to life by tuing their two-dimensional works into multi-dimensional presentations replete with models, costumes, music, dance, special effects, and plenty of gifted artistry in motion. On day two, a massive, hands-on training session was held that focused on coloring and cutting techniques for the Pure Alert trend collection, facilitated by Matrix artistic directors and other members of the artistic team.

The message that was threaded throughout this astounding event: Spread the Love. Walsh relates, “Every day we’re given 86,400 precious seconds to live life to the fullest. Why not spend at least some of those seconds spreading the love—positive feelings and actions that will help make the world a more beautiful place? A simple hug only takes a couple of seconds, so what are you going to do with your remaining 85,398 seconds?”

Matrix’s Spread the Love message: Spend your time consciously doing something good for you and your family, team, business, clients, and the world. Love what you do and do it with love and passion. Be genuinely caring. Become active in causes that are near and dear to your heart. Be the change.

Beauty Blast!

A mighty styling force of nearly 9,000 converged in Las Vegas for three days of pure Redken bliss.

When stylists from over 35 countries get together for some inteational communing, more than a gabfest is sure to follow. At the recent Redken Symposium, held at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, this truism didn’t disappoint. Launching the event with a bang: The Grand Opening with featured artists Rodney Cutler, Jenny Balding, Chris Baran, Kris Sor-bie and Sam Villa. A bevy of classes and workshops followed, taught by beauty and business maestros from around the world. Offering 20  different classes, Redken educa-tion covered a variety of topics including profitability, hands-on color and cutting techniques, and personal and career development. HOT’s faves: “I Am Your Client” by Ann Mincey; “Creative Color Surge” by Dhaniel Doud, Julie Hoffman, George Garcia, and Tisha Hall; and “You Had Me at Hello,” by Kristi Valenzuela. We also rediscovered and fell in love all over again with Inspiring World of Redken artists Hugo Urias and Ty Isobe from the USA, and Richard Kavanagh, a very compelling and gifted stylist from New Zealand.

Of course, what’s a beauty event without a few honorees? During the Symposium, Charles David Salon & Spa was inducted into the Redken Hall of Family; Thomas Scott Salon was named Salon of the Year; Blo Salon captured the Rising Star award; and Individia Salon & Spa was given the nod for Largest Percentage Gain in terms of Redken sales.

Then there was all that shopping going on. Housed in a room the size of a healthy H&M store, Redken fans flocked en masse to purchase everything from cozy pajamas and chic tops, to salon gear, educational DVDs and much more. Even better, many of the featured educators were on hand to chat it up at their booths. The browse crowd was also treated to an online area that demonstrated the new Redken “Style Station” app and the opportunity to show off their cut-ting chops with the “Busy Scissors” game by Nintendo Wii.

The Bash—a Redken nighclub scene for 9,000 guests and educators—included a performance by famed band Train. Prior to performing, a photo op for a lucky few—including HOT editor Jeryl Spear—took place. While waiting to be snapped, Spear overheard lead singer Patrick Monahan commenting to guitarist Jimmy Stafford, “I’ve never seen so many stylish, decked-out people in one place…ever!” What did he expect? By even the highest beauty standards, the Redken Symposium 2011 was a high-stepping event!
