It’s no secret that the sun’s intense ultraviolet rays are responsible for fading hair color year round. In the summer months, the rays are more powerful, the damage accelerated. So just as we protect our skin from the sun, we must also protect our hair.  In recent years, many products have been developed to shield the hair from UV rays. Minardi’s Pre Wash Therapy Treatment is a great example because it not only defends against sun damage and preserves hair color by forming a thick coating around the strand, but it actually improves the condition of the hair by infusing it with the fats, lipids and proteins lost during hair color and chemical treatments.

The Treatment uses ingredients well known for their restorative powers. Safflower Oil is key in endowing the hair with fatty acids. Meanwhile, Wheat Protein delivers a critical supply of amino acids and proteins. The proteins act to effectively seal the amino acids into the hair shaft, giving hair direct and substantial nutrition. Shea Butter contains cinnamic acid, a natural agent that protects against UV rays. Thus, as it feeds the hair, it also protects the hair and your color from the summer sun.

Try applying the treatment from root to tip. Then pull your hair into a ponytail and head out for a run or a bike ride. Within an hour, all the rich ingredients will have been absorbed and, voila!, you’ll have nourished your hair while shielding it from the sun.

1. THE RIGHT TREATMENT FOR SUMMER
The sun can play havoc with the hair. Exposure to heat and UV rays can cause some hair to become dry, brittle and split. The rays from the sun will cause natural hair color to lighten and color to fade. But just as 20 minutes in the sun can help with the absorption of vitamin D, so too does it vitalize the hair’s roots and stimulate the scalp, making the hair stronger and healthier.

2. IF YOU CAN’T TAKE THE HEAT
All hair will respond to intense heat. Our hair can bu just as easily as our skin. Darker, coarser hair has more resistance to the sun than lighter, thinner hair types. However, fine and color treated hair tend to be the most affected. This is due to the weaker nature of the hair. If the hair’s cuticle is damaged, the hair is more likely to be affected by environmental conditions. Longer hair is also likely to get tired during the summer months, as the natural sebum struggles to reach mid lengths and ends. Also high fashion colors such as reds and coppers will have a high level of fade during summer if they are not cared for properly.

3. SUMMER HAIR PROTECTION
There are many ways you can help protect your hair during the summer months. First, use treatments to maintain moisture levels. Second, use leave-in treatments and thermal protectors prior to styling to give added protection. There are also UV protectors that act a sunscreen for the hair. One of the easiest remedies is to simply wear a hat. If you are constantly tying your hair back, make sure to use elastics that are gentle on the hair and don’t pull. Also, do not use direct heat appliances like hair dryers and straightening irons. Get the right haircut so you don’t have to use a lot of heat to style it and use the right shampoo and conditioner recommended by professional hairdressers. When swimming, use a chlorine and chemical removing shampoo after you get out of the pool. Before going in the water, dampen hair and apply a leave-in conditioning agent. Shampoo and use a deep conditioner ona bi-weekly basis. Conditioners, leave-in conditioners and styling products that have UV filters and thermal protection will be helpful. By using products that have these properties, you’ll create a multi-layered defense against the sun that will give maximum protection.

4. CAN I DYE AND CURL THIS SUMMER?
Naturally, any chemical service affects the condition of the hair. Always seek the advice of a technician if you are considering a new color or perm. Most people will continue to have chemical services during the summer months. This is fine pro-vided that the home maintenance of the color or perm is adhered to. You just need to be more aware of the condition of the hair during summer, and possibly change your regime. Your stylist and colorist will be able to assist you with a home maintenance regime appropriate to your hair.

HAIR
Summer hair is first and foremost wearable hair. Summer styles embrace a more carefree approach to hair, making the most of hair’s natural movement. Fuller, more textured hair is makinga comeback. And when it comes to shorter, sassier styles, leave the flat iron behind and pull out the brushes and diffusers. The fashion this summer is short cuts with soft layering and a few highlights for added contrast and definition. Shorter styles with undercuts, leaving overhanging layers for softness. Bobs are always in good taste and look fantastic slicked and tucked behind the ear. Another great look is the “LoB,” the long bob popularized by Gwyneth Paltrow Alteately, long hair with long layering and foiling the hair from inside not from the top giving the illusion of a shimmering look. For longer hair, you can’t do better than a braid this summer. Not only do braids look fantastic but they are a great way of controlling lo-ger lengths.

MAKEUP
There are two main trends for summer makeup. The first is gold-en, glowing skin that shimmers with either bronzes or golds swiped over the eyelid and a coat of either brown or black mascara. Complete the look with a beautiful peachy cream blush that can double as a lip color. The second big trend is to keep all makeup toa minimum so you can see the natural skin, but add a pop of bright color to one area of the face. This could be an eyeshadow, a colored eyeliner or a bright lipstick. Pick one feature and make it stand out. And always use a few individual false lashes on the outer coers of the eyes when you are dressing up to go out.

Skin

Sunbeams can make skin dry, dull and even cause sun-dam-age when the skin is not protected. If that weren’t enough, the sun’s rays accelerate the skin’s natural ageing process. Fortunately, protection comes in many forms. Your best bet is to use an SPF 30+ sunscreen and apply it regularly through-out the day. A hat or protective clothing are both fantastic options. And as far as your skincare regimen goes, make sure to include plenty of products that include SPF, such as moisturizers, primers and lip balms. By using an moisturizer with SPF protection, not only will you keep your skin hydrated, but you’ll also protect it from the damaging effects of the sun.
