Lucie Doughty cares for actress Elizabeth Banks’ color in real life and for movies and red carpet events, to name just one of her topnotch clients. She also heads up editorial photography for Paul Mitchell, making the time she spends ’dressing gorgeous women both demanding and incredibly rewarding.
“I have to make sure that everything goes perfectly when it comes to their locks,” she reveals. “For that reason, I have a huge inventory of add-on hair that I use on a regular basis. When a model or celebrity needs a temporary change-up—like plumping up a chignon or bun, or adding a fringe—I automatically reach for a hair addition.”
Session and celebrity work aside, “the best thing about extensions these days is that high-quality hair is available to everyone, and not just those who live in the spotlight,” continues Doughty. “Because I work one day a week behind the chair, and my time is primarily taken up with color services, I don’t do bonded extensions for my clients. Even so, I still do color-matching services for human hair, clip-in pieces, with the most common ones being ponytails. Clients love faux ponies because they’re quick and easy to apply and hide a bad hair day without having to go completely undercover by wearing a wig.”
