Pomades vs. Pastes

Scruples Research Chemist explains what makes each of these styling products unique.

Pomades and pastes are styling staples for most stylists, but sometimes confusion still arises between which one of these great products to use for a particular style or hair type.

Here are some general differences and typical similarities that will help you make the right decision when choosing the perfect styler for each client.

Pomades are emulsifications of water, oils and waxes. They offer texture, definition, separation, and shine. Pomades have higher oil contents than pastes.

Pastes are emulsifications of water and oil or silicone, and may or may not have a waxy component (smooth paste vs. tacky paste).

Typically, they deliver more texture with less shine than a pomade, and definition with less elasticity. Pastes have higher water contents than pomades.
