Complex Issue

When Keratin Complex flashed onto the beauty scene in 2007, many product makers were scrambling to take the biggest bite out of the keratin smoothing pie. It’s no wonder when the newest kid on the block, Larry Solomon of Keratin Complex, suddenly registered a big blip on the beauty screen, he was met with more than a little skepticism. Was he going to be just another flash in the pan? Apparently not…a big not for that matter.

Solomon immersed himself in the beauty business as only a savvy scholar would do, and leveraged his considerable knowledge of big business to give his company a huge assist. Today he’s a recognizable figure at all major trade shows, supports worthy beauty causes, and is rocketing his keratin-based company into the stratosphere with innovative, rapid-fire product releases. Coming soon: Keratin Complex Keraceuticals, a keratin-based skincare brand! (KeratinComplex.com)

High and Dry

Keratin Complex is amassing a wealth of keratin-based products, including the new, six-piece Style Therapy line. “Each product helps to control or promote smoother hair, as well as longer-lasting therapy benefits by replacing the gradual loss of keratin proteins after a smoothing service,” explains President Larry Solomon.

Bringing curl relief to the frizzy masses, Keratin Complex Express Blowout services are less expensive than traditional smoothing therapies, keep locks smooth and frizz-free for up to six weeks and can be done at the shampoo bowl—even right after a color service!
Dry shampoos and conditioners help to prolong the effects of keratin therapies. How? The fewer times that clients wash and treat their hair between services, the greater amount of keratin protein that stays in the hair! Keratin Complex Style Therapy Lock Launder instantly cleanses dirty strands; Lock Luster provides detangling and moisturizing benefits.

Four for your Money!

New ironing techniques created by Keratin Complex help to control curl strength and patte during the smoothing process. Now the 4-in-1 Curler offers four different barrel sizes with one tool, which can be used during therapy treatments, or afterwards to create single or poly-textured styles!

Curl Out

When visiting the GKhair headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, HOT associate publisher Pierre Cuevas couldn’t help but overhear customer service reps speaking in seven different languages as they talked to customers around the world. Starting as a small company in 2007, GKhair (formerly named Global Keratin) has grown exponentially around the globe. Today, the company’s worldwide reach has made GKhair a highly competitive manufacturer, which offers salon therapy and treatment products, specialty styling tools, and home-care regimens throughout Europe, North America, South America, Middle East, French Polynesia, Asia and more. The company’s biggest point-of-difference: proprietary Juvexin, a keratin blend developed exclusively for hair! (GKhair.com)

GKhair is dramatically expanding its offerings of keratin-based products with its recent launch of a complete keratin-based color line: Hair Taming System with Juvexin Oil Hair Color.

Curl Culprit

If you have curly or straight hair, your hair bulbs are to blame…or are they? In general, curly hair has a hook-shaped bulb while straight hair has a straight-shaped bulb. But what determines the appearance of the bulb in the first place? According to L’Ore´al Paris research scientists, the correct answer is most likely “hormones.”This explains why some people experience dramatic texture shifts at puberty, onset of menopause or even after childbirth. And, because hormones most likely dictate the shape of hair bulbs, with hormone therapy, that shape could conceivably be changed.

It certainly gives one pause for thought. In terms of future think, will clients really go to their doctors for hormone modifications in order to achieve their ideal hair textures? From a medical point of view, a change in hormones would be a radical approach to texture control. But considering the ever-increasing desire for perfection, women’s beauty needs might one day prevail!

Keratin-free Smoother

Odor-free Surface Smooth & Healthy is a hybrid, non-keratin smoothing treatment that does its best work on normal-to-coarse  textures and up to 50% highlighted hair. When done at the shampoo bowl as an express treatment, results last up to six weeks; for full-treatment Smooth & Healthy services, hair stays sleek and compliant for up to five months. “Our treatment softens disulfide bonds—as opposed to breaking them—and infuses hair with amaranth protein and babassu oil throughout the process,” explains President Wayne Grund. Addressing the Hairy
Elephant in the Coer

As most beauty pros are aware, keratin-based smoothing treatments have had a rough go in the past few months, with Health Canada and the European Union banning specific brands, and alarming reports about high levels of formaldehyde being reported by OSHA in the United States. But like most situations, the truth about keratin therapies is not black-and-white or good-and-bad. There are claims of widely varying test results, misleading chemical callouts and mislabeling of products by experts on both sides of this confusing situation. Some respected beauty chemists even claim that the so-called formaldehyde gas that’s emitted during the ironing step in traditional keratin therapies is not formaldehyde at all.

Strictly speaking, keratin smoothing therapies are not formulated with formaldehyde, simply because this chemical is a gas and not a liquid. However, according to current OSHA standards, there are ingredients contained in many keratin therapies that produce formaldehyde. OSHA states that anything above .02 ppm (two parts per million) of formaldehyde is unsafe to humans. Yet, in an open letter to OSHA, Doug Schoon, M.S. Chemistry and President of Schoon Scientific, denounces OSHA’s claim for the simple fact they’re actually measuring concentrations of a completely different substance: methylene glycol.

And so the confusion continues. You can access Schoon’s complete letter to OSHA, as well as other materials gathered from credible sources about the pros and cons of keratin therapies at Hot.HairsHow.us.

Touting a new approach to smoothing services via Pravana Naturceuticals Nano-Amino Complex, Perfection SmoothOut claims to suspend the inteal textural memory of hair to transform it into a much smoother, softer and shinier material.
