All in the Family

Scruples Co-President of MarketingTracy Liguori chats it up about thenewest faces of Scruples andtheir familial ties withold-time values.

Roll up your sleeves and pass the products! When the Liguori siblings were given lead positions at Scruples Professional Salon Products, silver spoons were nowhere to be found. “Silver spoons?” laughs Co-President Tracy Liguori. “We eaed our way in the beauty business, first by Mia and I working outside the company at the salon and distributor levels, and Frank, Jr. by packing and shipping Scruples products before finally being promoted to managing inventory and accounts receivables.

My dad, Frank, Sr., who co-founded Scruples, always hoped we would one day take control of the business, but not until we had shown the love and know-how needed to continue succeeding and growing our company. It has been a long jouey and we’ve loved every minute of it…well, almost every minute, anyway.”Today, the hard-working Liguori family team includes Co-Presidents Tracy and Frank, Jr. Liguori and Mia Liguori McHugh. Tracy is the marketing guru, Frank, Jr. oversees distribution operations and Mia manages the Scruples Design Team as well as product research and development.

So what’s different about Scruples today? From one vantage point there have been important changes, but from another, nothing has changed at all. “We’ve definitely become more sophisticated about the why, how and when of new product launches, including using focus groups and seeking the advice of branding and trend experts,” Tracy shares. “We’ve created a more in-depth education program and are focused on providing even more targeted business information and materials to help salon owners grow their businesses. But our core values—including absolutely no diversion—have remained the same. When my father and Jack Storey founded Scruples in 1983, they did so to give beauty professionals an honest option for their businesses. Their original focus is still at the core of our culture. Our family has always been immersed in professional beauty; it’s now our responsibility to keep it that way.”
