Lucie Doughty

It seems as though award-winning stylist Lucie Doughty, co-owner of Venice, Calif.'s The Mastery salon and editorial director for Paul Mitchell, was destined to become a stylist.

A native of England, Doughty's earliest memories trace back to spending countless Saturdays sweeping her mother's hair salon. Upon graduating from an extensive two-year cosmetology program in England, Doughty landed a coveted position as an apprentice at Vidal Sassoon. This led to opportunities in Manchester, England and Frankfurt, Germany. Doughty's passion for teaching began when she was appointed head of the color department with responsibility for teaching apprentices.

Eventually she relocated to the U.S. to head the color department at the Santa Monica, Calif. academy. It was there that Doughty met motivational speaker Winn Claybaugh who was launching the first Paul Mitchell School in Costa Mesa, Calif. Doughty, who was appointed color specialist, went on to create the color curriculum that is still in use at more than 100 Paul Mitchell schools today. This star stylist has nabbed a number of wins in a variety of NAHA categories and was awarded "Teacher of the Year" by Vidal Sassoon and Paul Mitchell.

Q. What experiences have most impacted your career?
A. Moving from England to Germany to work with Vidal Sassoon was a pivotal time for me. I was working in a small salon in a little town close to my home in England and when I went to work for Sassoon, I was on my own and working for a prestigious company. That's where I shaped my skill-set and esthetic.

Q. What have you learned from growing up in a family that owned a salon?
A. Work ethic. My mom taught me to work hard and never sit down until everything's done.

Q. As a color specialist who created a color curriculum, how do you find inspiration and then translate it?
A. Inspiration is everywhere when you're open to it. I pull a lot from hairstyles I see on runways and in editorial, and then I translate the 'idea' for consumers. I love when hair looks effortless and chic, and that can be translated numerous ways.

Q. What color trends are you eagerly embracing?
A. Pastels. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are wearing them. It started with the ombre technique. People are now being inspired and going for more solid colors. Pastels are soft, so they are consumer-friendly.

Q. What energizes you most when working as editorial director?
A. The vision and what's possible. I like working on the vision beforehand and then working with the team and getting their input, and then seeing what's possible. It's very exciting!

Q. Which creative genius do you admire most and why?
A. Angelo Seminara is brilliant! Everything he does is so beautiful and creative. I always wish I'd thought of it.

Q. What valuable lessons have you learned?
A. Hard work pays off. Respect others and be humble. Continue to practice because there's always something to learn.

Q. If you weren't in the industry, what would you do?
A. I'd be a chef. I'm not saying that I'm a good cook, but there are a lot of similarities when it comes to creativity. When you're cooking you have to consider the colors and design to create a great looking dish. Cooking and styling both make people happy.

Q. What's your personal mantra?
A. What new thing can I learn today? How can I be better than I was yesterday?

Q. Which coveted awards have you nabbed most recently?
A. I've been focusing on helping others with their entries, but I'd love to win the International Hairstylist of the Year award.
