Steven Robertson

Steven Robertson is star stylist and artistic team leader at Lunatic Fringe and a Learning Leader at Paul Mitchell The School in Salt Lake City. He showcases a variety of innovative looks from sleek, tamed tresses to the surreal and outrageous. Robertson's award-winning work has been published internationally in numerous magazines. He also uses his creative twists on beauty for commercial shoots, TV and film.

Q. How did you make the move from pursuing a career in biology to fashioning hair?
A. I pursued hairdressing to help pay for my education in academics. I graduated from Paul Mitchell The School and immediately fell in love with the industry.

Q. What drives your passion for dresswork and finishing?
A. In hair school I'd often watch updos and styling videos and then replicate the looks. Leaing to manipulate, move and set hair makes me feel like a powerful hairdresser.

Q. Define your signature style.
A. Definitely whimsical with a dark twist. Think avant-garde looks that are artistic rather than theatrical.

Q. What truly inspires and energizes you?
A. The fashion industry, specifically Alexander McQueen's genius approach to creating avant-garde looks. I believe it's important to focus on "artistic" rather than "fantasy."

Q. What words of wisdom can you share with the industry?
A. Keep yourself motivated and excited. I believe in constant education, attending industry shows and events, and dipping into photo work, bridal styling and working with non-profits.

Q. How do you translate next season's fashion trends into styling?
A. There's a focus on 70's with a bit of 50's flair. This means adding stronger lines and shapes, whether it's a denser perimeter on longer hair or one-length bobs with less graduation. A wavy texture is still prominent.

A. I haven't snagged a NAHA award yet, but I'm feeling good about next year! I won the What's Next Awards in the texture category and Best Artistic Hair Design, Arty Awards in 2010.

Q. Who do you admire most?
A. Vivienne Mackinder, Shawn Trujillo and Angie Katsanevas. Vivienne is a genius. There's nothing she isn't capable of and I love her discipline! She's worked hard to develop her techniques and technically keeps me motivated.
Shawn and Angie-the power behind Lunatic Fringe-have provided me with opportunities in business coaching, education and artistic expression. When I approach them with an idea, they help me make it happen!

Q. If you weren't styling tresses, what would you do?
A. I'd be a motivational speaker or work on the business side of the industry. In this business, I've found a place where I can be myself and be with people that I adore. I've also found a company that makes me feel at home.

Q. What's your personal mantra?
A. Imagination is more important than knowledge. I'd rather come up with new ideas-even the "impossible" ones, than to strive to know everything there is to know about a specific subject. Having the ability to create new rules and a place where innovative ideas are accepted-that's where growth takes place for me.
